๐๏ธ Aveiro: The Venice of Portugal
The final stop of our journey brought us to Aveiro, a city that literally enchanted me. In this Aveiro and Costa Nova Travel Guide, you’ll find what makes Portugal’s Venice and colorful coastal village truly special. Part of our trip to Portugal included visits to Aveiro and Costa Nova. We stayed in a wonderful hotel right in the historic center, overlooking the famous canals that flow through the city. The view from our room was postcard-perfect: colorful boats gliding silently across the water. This is a must-see destination in any Aveiro and Costa Nova Travel Guide for exploring Portugal’s Venice and vibrant coastal attractions.

๐ฃ The Traditional Moliceiro Boats
During our stay, we toured the city aboard Aveiro’s characteristic gondolas, called moliceiro. These traditional boats were originally used to collect “moliรงo,” a seaweed used as fertilizer in the region’s agricultural fields.
The moliceiro are true floating works of art, decorated with vibrant colors and traditional Portuguese motifs. Each boat tells a story through its picturesque decorations, often featuring scenes of daily life or popular proverbs hand-painted on the sides. If you’re planning a trip, don’t forget to include the moliceiro in your Aveiro and Costa Nova Travel Guide to fully appreciate Portugal’s Venice and its cultural significance.
๐๏ธ The Canals and History of Aveiro
Aveiro’s canals are the beating heart of this fascinating city. These artificial waterways were dug in the 16th century to connect the city to the Atlantic Ocean, transforming Aveiro into an important commercial port for salt and fish. For a comprehensive Aveiro and Costa Nova Travel Guide to Portugal’s Venice, learning the history of the canals is essential.
Walking along the canals, I admired the elegant Art Nouveau palaces reflected in the water. The city experienced its golden age between the 19th and early 20th centuries, when it became famous for salt and ceramic production. This period of prosperity is still visible in the colorful architecture of the center.
๐ Costa Nova: The Village of a Thousand Colors
๐ The Fishermen’s Houses
A few kilometers from Aveiro, we visited Costa Nova several times, a small fishing village that seems straight out of a fairy tale. Our trip to Portugal: Costa Nova impressed us with the famous multicolored striped houses that characterize this small town. Through this Aveiro and Costa Nova Travel Guide, you will discover Portugal’s Venice and the colorful coastal village’s unique charm.
These dwellings, originally simple fishermen’s huts, are painted with vertical stripes in the most vivid colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange. Each house has its unique color combination, creating an extraordinary visual effect along the entire coast.

๐ผ The Praia da Barra Lighthouse
During our excursions to Costa Nova, we couldn’t miss the majestic Farol da Barra, one of Portugal’s tallest lighthouses at 62 meters high. This imposing lighthouse, built in 1893, dominates the coast and offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.
The red and white striped structure rises like a giant on the beach, guiding boats to safe harbor for over a century. Climbing to its summit was an unforgettable experience: the 360-degree panorama embraces the entire coast and inland.

๐ The Fresh Fish Market
One of the most authentic experiences of our stay was visiting Costa Nova’s fresh fish market. Every morning, local fishermen bring their catch directly from the sea to the market, creating a lively and colorful atmosphere.
We could admire the incredible variety of fresh fish: silver sardines, sea bass, sea bream, octopus, and many other typical Atlantic fish. The scents of the sea mixed with the animated voices of vendors offering their best merchandise.
๐ฝ๏ธ Fish Galore
We couldn’t leave Costa Nova without tasting the local specialties. We ate fresh fish in abundance, trying traditional dishes prepared according to recipes passed down through generations of fishing families.
Caldeiradas (fish soups), grilled sardines, bacalhau prepared in a thousand different ways, and fresh seafood delighted our palate. Every meal was a journey through the authentic flavors of the Portuguese sea, accompanied by local white wines perfect for enhancing the taste of fish.
