Discover Sesimbra through its golden beaches, medieval history, and culinary traditions. This Sesimbra Portugal Travel Guide will help you explore hidden beaches, the medieval castle, and local cuisine. Sesimbra, located in the Setรบbal region, about 50 kilometers south of Lisbon and accessible via the XXV April Bridge (too crowded and chaotic) or the more modern Vasco da Gama Bridge (immense and wonderful, much more fluid), is a hidden pearl on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. This charming town is renowned for its golden beaches, medieval castle, picturesque lighthouse, and evocative sanctuary. Perfect for a relaxing escape, Sesimbra offers an irresistible combination of natural beauty, history, and culture.
Sesimbra is a fascinating destination that offers something for everyone, from non-Italian tourists (practically we never found any compatriots) seeking relaxation to those wanting to explore Portugal’s rich history and culture. Plan your visit and let yourself be enchanted by this magnificent coastal city.

๐จ Accommodation and Cuisine
We stayed at the Sesimbra Oceanfront Hotel – a wonderful facility with Spa and Ocean-view Pool featuring hundreds of sea-view rooms, all equipped with private terraces. The cuisine is truly excellent and affordable and, as expected, mainly based on fresh catch with dozens of small restaurants all equipped with outdoor barbecues (their peculiarity) that serve grilled fish from 10 in the morning until 10 in the evening. Forget about meat because here it’s rarely found and will cost much more than fish dishes and will always be of poor quality.
We always had lunch and dinner in these small establishments and found friendly staff, low prices, and exceptional dishes. Small detail, not insignificant, they bring you bread with cheese and sardine pรขtรฉ, which is normal for them, but it’s always for a fee though you can refuse it without any problem, although I highly recommend tasting everything together: bread, cheese, and the pรขtรฉ.
๐๏ธ Sesimbra’s Beaches
Sesimbra is famous for its splendid beaches, ideal for relaxing in the sun or practicing water sports. Among the most famous beaches we find:
- Praia da California: This wide golden sand beach stretches along the city’s eastern coast. It’s perfect for families thanks to its calm and clean waters, though really cold by our standards. Here you’ll find numerous bars and restaurants where you can taste delicious fresh fish dishes, have aperitifs with snails -caracรณis which they’re crazy about, and plenty of beer but few spritzes.
- Praia do Ouro: Located in Sesimbra’s center and starting right after the old fort (which I recommend visiting), it’s another very popular beach. With its soft, golden sand, it offers spectacular views of the port and castle. It’s an ideal place to relax and enjoy the panorama.
- Praia da Ribeira do Cavalo: For those seeking a bit of adventure, this hidden beach is accessible only by sea by renting a taxi boat or through a hiking trail not suitable for beginners. Its turquoise waters and secluded location make it a true earthly paradise.
๐ฐ Sesimbra Castle
The Castelo de Sesimbra, dating back to the 12th century, dominates the city from atop a hill. Built by the Moors and later expanded by Christians, the castle offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and ocean. A walk among its ancient walls will transport you back in time, allowing you to imagine medieval life. Inside the castle, you’ll find a small chapel, a small cemetery, and various information points that tell the story of this fascinating monument. The site is always open, even though Google Maps indicates 10-22, and there’s no entrance fee, and often during summer evenings, small parties and/or concerts take place.

๐ Cabo Espichel and its Lighthouse
Cabo Espichel is a promontory located in Portugal, west of the village of Sesimbra. It’s bordered to the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the north by national road 379 and Ribeira dos Caixeiros. It marks the southwestern end of the Setรบbal peninsula, and above the promontory sits the homonymous lighthouse.
The Cabo Espichel Lighthouse, located a few kilometers from Sesimbra, is an unmissable place for those visiting the region. Built in the 18th century, this lighthouse stands on a spectacular cliff and offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The surrounding area is perfect for hiking and admiring the unique natural landscape, characterized by rock formations and rich marine fauna.
South of the Lagosteiros inlet, about 2 km from the lighthouse and 1.2 km from the Sanctuary parking lot, on Upper Jurassic limestone slabs with a slope of about 40ยบ, lies the Pedra da Mua dinosaur footprint deposit. This deposit contains several series of footprints left by sauropod dinosaurs (quadrupedal and herbivorous) and theropods (bipedal and carnivorous). For trekking enthusiasts, this turns out to be one of the most beautiful and fascinating routes in the entire territory.

โช The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel
Not far from the lighthouse stands the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel, a pilgrimage site dating back to the 14th century. This religious complex includes a church, pilgrim accommodations, and a series of historic buildings. Legend tells that the Virgin Mary appeared on this promontory, and since then it has become an important site of devotion. Visiting the sanctuary offers not only a spiritual experience but also an opportunity to explore local history and culture.

โน๏ธ Other Interesting Information

๐ญ Conclusions
We fell in love with this location for its beauty, climate, excellent food, and infinite natural beauties throughout the territory. Sesimbra is a wonderful, relaxing, and affordable city, and I recommend it to everyone because you’ll surely leave a piece of your heart there, and we promised ourselves to visit it for a second time as soon as possible.
