From Sesimbra to Giant Waves: Peniche and Nazaré, Jewels of the Portuguese Coast
Leaving the splendid Sesimbra behind, our road trip took us to two of the most fascinating destinations in central Portugal: Peniche and Nazaré. These towns, from Sesimbra to Giant Waves Peniche and Nazaré, are jewels of the Portuguese coast that embody the wild soul of the Atlantic, each with their own unique wonders and millenary stories to tell.
🏰 Peniche: Fortress on the Sea and Surfing Paradise
🌊 History and Characteristics of Peniche
Peniche is a picturesque coastal town that rises on a small rocky peninsula, connected to the mainland by a thin sandy isthmus. Its strategic position has made it an important fishing port and natural defensive bastion throughout the centuries.
The history of Peniche has its roots in Roman times, but it was during the Middle Ages that it acquired importance as a fishing and maritime trade center. Its fortified walls and castle still testify today to the military importance this town has played in defending the Portuguese coast.

🗼 The Cabo Carvoeiro Lighthouse: Guardian of the Ocean
The Cabo Carvoeiro Lighthouse is one of Peniche’s most iconic symbols. Built in 1790, it is one of Portugal’s oldest lighthouses. This 27-meter-high square tower rises majestically on a promontory 3 kilometers from Peniche center, offering spectacular views over the infinite ocean.
The lighthouse is not just a navigation reference point, but also one of the most photographed places in the region. The unique rock formations surrounding Cabo Carvoeiro create a dramatic and wild landscape, perfect for those seeking breathtaking views to immortalize.

🏄♂️ Peniche: World Mecca of Surfing
Peniche is recognized as one of Europe’s best surf spots and attracts surfers from all over the world. The variety of waves is impressive: within a 20-minute radius from the city you can find rocky reef breaks, easy beach breaks, waves for longboarding and perfect barrels.
During European autumn and winter, the best and biggest waves arrive, when the Ripcurl Pro Portugal takes place at Supertubos, with massive barrels breaking in front of Peniche. Supertubos beach is particularly famous for its perfect tubular waves, considered among Europe’s best.
🏝️ The Berlengas Islands: Natural Paradise
A short distance from Peniche’s coast lies the Berlengas archipelago, a natural treasure made of rocky islands emerging from turquoise seas, with cliffs populated by seabirds. Berlenga Grande, the main island, offers hiking trails, a historic lighthouse and crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling.
🌾 The Windmills of Serra de Montejunto
In the inland between Peniche and Nazaré rises the Serra de Montejunto, a mountain that guards one of Portugal’s most fascinating heritages: traditional windmills. This mountain range once hosted the largest concentration of windmills in the Iberian Peninsula.
During the journey between the two coastal cities, it’s absolutely worth making a detour to admire these white giants that dot the hilly landscape. The mills, built mainly between the 18th and 19th centuries, were the economic heart of rural communities, grinding wheat and corn to produce flour.
Today the Moinho de Avis remains in operation, a mill from 1810 passionately restored by miller Miguel Nobre. This mill represents a dive into the past, where it’s possible to witness traditional grinding and understand the importance of these structures in Portuguese daily life. The panoramic view from Serra de Montejunto also offers unforgettable glimpses of the surrounding countryside.

🌊 Nazaré: The World Capital of Giant Waves
🎣 History and Traditions of Nazaré
Nazaré is an ancient fishing town that has managed to keep its maritime traditions intact. The name probably derives from Nazareth, testifying to the ancient religious devotion of its inhabitants. For centuries, Nazaré has been known mainly for its fishing community, traditional colorful boats and women dressed in characteristic seven-skirt costumes.
Many tourists and Catholic pilgrims visiting central Portugal, especially the famous Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, make a stop in Nazaré. The town still preserves its authentic charm today, with typical white houses perched on the cliff.

🌊 The Giant Waves Phenomenon
Nazaré has become a popular surf destination thanks to the extremely high waves that form due to the presence of the Nazaré underwater canyon. In front of the fishing town’s coast lies the Nazaré Canyon, Europe’s largest underwater canyon, which reaches the impressive depth of 5,000 meters.
The canyon increases and channels incoming ocean waves which, together with local marine currents, dramatically enlarges the wave height. This unique geological phenomenon creates perfect conditions for waves that can exceed 30 meters in height during winter storms.
🏄♂️ World Records and Big Wave Surfing
Praia do Norte in Nazaré is very versatile: it has giant waves in winter and “normal” waves during the rest of the year. In winter 2016-17 the World Surf League held its first big wave event in Portugal, the Nazare Big Wave Challenge, consolidating this location’s worldwide reputation.
The history of surfing in Nazaré was immortalized in the documentary “100 Foot Wave,” which follows the decade-long odyssey of big wave pioneer Garrett McNamara, the man who first brought worldwide attention to this incredible spot.

🗺️ What to Visit in Nazaré
🔍 The Nazaré Lighthouse and Panoramic Points
The cliffs near the Nazaré Lighthouse, overlooking Praia do Norte, are the most popular point for observing the waves. This elevated panoramic point offers spectacular views and is photographers’ favorite. The historic lighthouse, located at the edge of the cliffs, represents one of the best observation points to admire nature’s spectacle
🚶♀️ Exploring the Historic Center
To feel Nazaré’s soul you should also stroll through its small streets. Enter a café and listen to the locals talking. Let time flow and chat a bit with the local inhabitants. The historic center’s narrow streets tell centuries of maritime history and preserve the authentic atmosphere of times past.
🚗 Our Itinerary: From Peniche to Nazaré
The journey between Peniche and Nazaré represents a perfect combination of adventure and culture. Having left Sesimbra early, we dedicated the morning to exploring Peniche, admiring its iconic lighthouse and breathing the electrifying atmosphere of international surf spots.
In the afternoon, the short journey to Nazaré gave us breathtaking coastal panoramas. Upon arrival, we were able to witness the sunset from the cliffs, with the ocean showing its power through imposing waves crashing on Praia do Norte.
📍 Practical Tips for the Visit
Best period for giant waves: October-March, when Atlantic storms generate the most spectacular waves.
Best period for traditional surfing: April-September, with milder conditions and more manageable waves.
How to get there: Both towns are easily reachable by car from Lisbon (about 1 hour) and represent ideal stops on a coastal itinerary.
